What is DBT therapy exactly?

Developed by the renowned Dr. Marsha Linehan in the 1980s, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive-behavioural therapy designed specifically to assist those living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Through weekly individual interpersonal effectiveness sessions, DBT provides powerful tools for individuals to learn how to manage their emotions and reduce behaviours that may be detrimental to themselves or others.

Through educating people in the techniques of managing emotions, tolerating distress, and developing interpersonal competence, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) has been found to be a successful form of treatment for both Borderline Personality Disorder as well as other forms of mental health challenges such as self-harm behaviour, substance abuse, and impulsive behaviours.

DBT therapy is data-driven and a lasting solution for those experiencing mental illness. With the help of an experienced DBT practitioner, individuals can gain skills and approaches to assist in managing difficult emotions and scenarios.

This treatment helps individuals become more aware of their emotions and learn how to cope with them in healthier ways. It can also assist those who suffer from communication difficulties within relationships, ultimately allowing for permanent life changes while promoting a feeling of contentment.

With evidence-based tools, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy grants individuals the power to take charge of their life and improve their mental health by constructing enduring solutions for handling rough emotions.

The use of these skills can help individuals reduce distress, increase self-respect, and form healthier relationships with themselves and others. As a result of these positive changes, individuals can gain increased confidence in their abilities to manage stress and live satisfying lives.

If you or someone you know is suffering from mental health issues such as BPD or other destructive behaviours, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy may be a valuable option for gaining greater control in life.

It is important to seek out treatment from an experienced DBT therapist who can provide guidance and support during the process of learning new skills and strategies. With the help of these tools, individuals can take steps towards improving their mental health and living a more fulfilling life.
